Discover the best things to do in Salzburg

Austria is a beautiful country, and numerous great cities in this country are no doubt on a traveller’s wish list. Of course, capital cities are among the most famous, so many may naturally opt to visit Vienna. While Vienna is undoubtedly a brilliant city, the city of Salzburg should not be overlooked. Indeed, there are many things to do in Salzburg, as the city has something for everyone.

The mention of the word ‘Salzburg’ may conjure up different images for different people. Salzburg is famous for being the birthplace of the legendary composer Wolfgang Mozart. However, the city is also known for numerous other things. For example, Salzburg is a staging ground for the beloved Broadway musical “The Sound of Music”. The city is also home to the famous football club RB Salzburg.

Unfortunately, this article can only cover some of the best things to do in Salzburg. However, you can find even more of the best things to do in Salzburg here.

When to visit Salzburg?

If you are looking to visit Salzburg, the summer months of June through to August provide the warmest temperatures. In these months, average maximum temperatures hover just above 20 degrees Celsius. However, bear in mind that this is also the peak of the holiday season. This means that the city is likely to welcome vast crowds of tourists during this time. If you wish to enjoy reasonably warm temperatures when you visit but not have to deal with the vast crowds, it is best to visit the city in September. The city is much less crowded, but the average maximum temperature is still warm, hovering around 20 degrees.

Explore Fortress Hohensalzburg

Fortress Hohensalzburg

As the name suggests, this fortress is quite high up. Hohensalzburg Fortress translates into ‘High Fortress’ in English. It sits on top of the Festungsberg Mountain and is 506 metres above sea level! The fortress is also one of the largest in Europe, measuring 250 metres long by 150 metres wide. Archbishop Gebhard, also known as Prince Gebhard I of Helfenstein, ordered the construction of the Fortress in 1077 as a defensive means of protecting the area from attacks.

As the Fortress is so high up, there are two options for you to access it. You can either take a 15-minute walk up the steep incline to the Fortress or take the funicular. We would highly recommend the funicular.  It takes just 1 minute as opposed to 15, and you don’t have to tire yourself out before you’ve even reached your destination!

History of the Fortress

The Fortress was meant to be quite basic. However, the archbishops of Salzburg were very powerful figures in what was then called the Holy Roman Empire. As a result, they expanded upon the initial plans to protect their interests. It was renovated again and again to provide the best possible protection for its occupants.

Despite the Fortress’s grand defences, the only time that the Fortress came under siege was during the German Peasants’ War in 1525. A group of peasants tried to oust Prince-Archbishop Matthäus Lang but failed to take the Fortress. More recently, the Fortress was used as a prison in the early 20th century. It held Italian prisoners of war during World War I and Nazi activists before Germany annexed Austria in March 1938.

RB Salzburg’s official name is FC Salzburg, but this is simply due to sponsorship restrictions. Although many football fans may have come to know the club since its takeover by the energy drink giant Red Bull in 2005, it has a long history before that point in time. The club was founded in 1933. However, it would be over 60 years until the club tasted its first League title success, which came in 1994.

Collectively, the club has won fifteen league titles and eight Austrian Cups, all eight of which came as doubles, as well as three Austrian Supercups. The club has enjoyed great success since the Red Bull takeover. A tour of the Red Bull Arena is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Salzburg.

A tour of RB Salzburg’s stadium will enable you to uncover the unique and interesting history of the club, both before and after the Red Bull takeover. You will also be able to go behind the scenes and access all the areas that fans are not allowed to visit on match-days, such as the dressing room and media interview rooms!
